ShadowHawk Special, ShadowHawks of Legend, Big Bang Comics
v.II #2
Kurt Busiek would establish, in The New ShadowHawk
series, that there had been ShadowHawks throughout history. ShadowHawks
of Legend was an anthology book that featured four of them.
A western, written by Beau Smith and drawn by yours truly, a Samurai
ShadowHawk witten by Stan Sakai and drawn by James Fry, a ShadowHawk
during the French revolution by Len Senecal and Ron Randall and, finally,
a story set in the First Dynasty of Egypt, featuring the origin of the
ShadowHawk written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Steve Liealoha.
And, yes, there was a ShadowHawk in the Silver-Age! I had a blast with
this bit of nonsense, a send-up of the Jack Schiff-era Bat Man comics.
Complete with the Shadowcar, Lady ShadowHawkette, Shadowdog and kid
sidekick, Squirrel (who would grow up to become Hawk’s Shadow in the
Johnstone series).
Our friends at Big Bang Comics borrowed the Silver-Age ShadowHawk
and teamed him up with their own Knight Watchman (which was sort
of like Bat Man teaming up with Bat Man, but everyone had fun and no
animals were hurt, so it was okay).
